A normal person trying to be a web designer

When someone works as a freelance and starts his own business has to think in many things. You are the only one running your business and that can be something good and also kind of chaotic.

Nowadays, if you have a business, one of the first things you need to know is to be actively online. It seems pretty obvious, but having a website, properly managing the social networks and planning marketing strategies can make a great difference in order to get new public or be more professional.

It’s something you know it’s a must when you start running a business on your own. But you are new in all of these and your first step will surely be going to Google and ask him how much it is to create a website. Prepare to freak out: there will be millions of ads, hundreds of websites offering you to do so. All of them look professional and they have an awesome portfolio. The question is: How much is it?

Well, a lot.

Actually, it’s not a lot (web designers also like to be paid and eat every day, if you know what I mean), but it is true that, for someone that is only beginning to grow a business and doesn’t know how it is going to be in the future, can be a huge inversion. In my search, I found Websites for translators, which is specialized in my field, although they can create a website for anyone. They had a very interesting offer for less than 900€, but I also found other businesses that offer less professional packages around 300€. Again, I don’t think it is too much, it’s just an inversion that you can think about later on.

So now, what? I don’t get a website? Don’t panic yet! Internet has options for everybody, from rich to poor, from starters to professionals.

In my case, I chose Webnode. They offer you free designs and you can customize them easily and quickly. Once you have it finished, you just have to pay for your domain and host and you’re ready to go with a brand new website that have your own company name. They have a premium package for 4.99€/month that includes a domain, a host, one email account and limited traffic, but enough to start.

Like this page, you will find others, like Wix, that allows you more customizing options, but it is a bit more expensive if you want to have your own domain and host (around 10€/month). You can test both of them, as I did, and then chose the one that fits better for you.

And what do I do about the logo? Here I have to tell you that there is no way to have it for free. You will have basically two options: pay a designer that do it for you, or learn by yourself how to do it by looking for graphic design or Photoshop courses. Since I am not very talented with graphics, I decided to call a friend who was willing to do it in a good price. If you like his style and want to contact him, you can take a look in his Facebook page: Totalpaná.

As you can see, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. You can have a professional image without making a huge inversion. Think that you can always improve your website when you business grow for real.

How about you? How did you get your first website?
